The family contanis about 450 genera and about 400 species distributed throughout the world but concentrated particularly in the Old and New World tropics. The two subfamilies treated here are the Rauvolfioideae with about 915 species in 82 genera worldwide, and the Apocynoideae with with about 822 species in 80 genera worldwide. In this region these two subfamilies have 38 native genera, and 119 native species.
